Connecting Canterbury Employers & Newcomers Skills programme

The Chamber provides this programme under contract to the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MoBIE) and aims to assist:

  • Employers - through connecting them with newcomer CVs outlining skills and providing support and advice to employers on the retention of newcomers they employ
  • Newcomers that include skilled migrants, partners of skilled migrants and international students on graduate (level 7 and above) job search visas - through assisting them with job options (referrals and placement into employment), connecting their skills with potential employers and through job search and CV development, career development and referral to career development programmes.

Employer information about employing skilled migrants

The Immigration New Zealand website features Skillfinder. Skillfinder provides information about finding and recruiting migrants. If you are new to recruiting staff from overseas this website link has information and advice to help you through the recruitment process, the visa options available and assistance with how to help new employees settle in New Zealand.

Employers can register on the website and receive updates and newsletters from Immigration New Zealand.

All employees, full-time, part-time, permanent, fixed-term or casual, are entitled to a copy of their (individual or collective) employment agreement in writing. The employment agreement must have terms and conditions which are at least as good as the minimum rights in the law. The link below gives useful information when talking with newcomer clients with English as a second language to help them understand their rights.
