Opening Presentation – Paul Mackay, BusinessNZ
Our Employer Series welcomes Paul Mackay from BusinessNZ who will provide an overview of the Employment Relations Amendment Act 2018 and its introduction to restoring protections for employees, strengthening the role of collective bargaining in the workplace, improving fairness and the delivery of work conditions and fair wages.
Following Paul's 45 minute update, you will then join two out of three breakout sessions, facilitated by Lane Neave, where you will deep-dive into the below impacted areas. Each breakout session is 45 minutes long and will run consecutively.
Please note: You will receive a link to select your two workshop preferences up to one week prior to the event.
1. Collective Bargaining, Union Rights, Triangular Employment Relationships and Fair Pay/Equity Pay (45 minutes)
The recent amendments to the Employment Relations Act 2000, some of which have already taken effect, have brought about some major changes to the Collective Bargaining landscape as well as Union rights in your workplace. This session will consider appropriate strategies for employers to ready themselves for this new industrial environment, as well as considering other emerging proposals including Fair Pay Agreements, Pay Equity and Triangular Employment Relationships.
2. Trial Periods and Probationary Periods (45 minutes)
Recruiting the right employee can be difficult and it is crucial that employers hire the right employee who will fit into their business. This session will look at employer obligations when implementing pre-work trials, trial periods and probationary periods. We will also review the recent amendments to meal and rest breaks.
3. Employees and Hours (45 minutes)
This is an area that can be confusing. This session will look at:
A. The types of Employment Agreements;
B. How to deal with the Employment Agreement when the nature of the employment relationship has changed;
C. Guaranteed hours;
D. Availability; and
E. Cancelling shifts.
